Distinctive and world-renowned: The inner city skyline of Frankfurt
Frankfurt, also known as Mainhattan: Due to its striking skyscrapers, which rank among the highest in Europe, Frankfurt displays a more modern appearance than any other city in Germany. The glass fronts of the company and bank head offices, which glisten in the sunshine, and the night-time skyline with its illuminated office floors, are sure to leave you with a lasting image of the metropolis on the Main. Nevertheless, allow yourself to be surprised: There are plenty of other sides to Frankfurt. There is rarely such a stark contrast as a visit to the viewing platform atop the Main Tower, immediately followed by a trip to one of the many cosy Eppelwoi (local cider) pubs in the Old Town. From the heights of the Main Tower, you can savour the breath-taking views over the city towards the Taunus mountains and the world-famous Bergstraße. In a lovely little Old Town pub in Alt-Sachsenhausen, your eyes will then tend to fall upon a well-filled glass of Eppelwoi, a type of cider known as the local elixir of Hesse. In this way, modernity and tradition exist side by side in perfect harmony in the city of Frankfurt.
In addition to the pleasant pub culture, the inner city is also full of world-renowned attractions. From the Alte Oper concert hall to the zoo, everyone's favourite way of passing time is catered for. The Römer ranks above all other sights, having served as Frankfurt's city hall for 600 years. With its characteristic stepped gable façade, it is one of the most recognisable landmarks of the city. It is also located on one of the most beautiful squares in Germany, the Römerberg, with its stunning Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen or "Fountain of Justice". Amble about the Römer square and take in the façades of the timber framed houses, which have been newly built in accordance with historical methods - all of this can be enjoyed in Frankfurt.
St. Paul's Church, a symbol of German democracy and national unity, is also well worth a visit. In 1848, the first German National Assembly met here and the on-site exhibition informs visitors about the church's eventful and moving history. An absolute must has to be a visit to the Goethe Haus and museum. The house, which has been reconstructed in keeping with the original plans and at great effort, offers visitors a lively insight into the life and work of the German poet laureate. In addition to this, the Goethe museum will provide you with a deep insight into the wealth of cultural treasures produced during Goethe's life, with a diverse collection of paintings, drawings and busts from the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite its importance in the cultural history of Europe, nowadays, Frankfurt serves as one of the most important finance and trade centres in the world. 60 banks, innumerable business and industry firms, scores of company head offices, as well as the world famous Frankfurt Trade Fair are all to be found here. The IAA International Motor Show and the Frankfurt Book Fair are just two of many internationally recognised highlights.
Those wishing to undertake an extensive Shopping tour will have a choice of almost endless possibilities on Frankfurt's famous shopping street, the Zeil. One of those being MyZeil, the extraordinary shopping and leisure world in Frankfurt over eight floors with spectacular architecture and an abundance of natural light. Allow yourself to be led astray by sweet temptation and treat yourself to something special. Designer fashion is more your thing? Goethestraße is the place you will find an array of exclusive boutiques and luxury designer outlets with French and Italian names that are bound to impress. What graced the catwalks of Paris and Milan yesterday, now decorates the shop windows on glamorous Goethestraße. In Frankfurt, everyone can live and relax however they wish. Life here has a high tempo but is also of a high quality. And when you finally have to leave the city, it takes only 15 minutes from the centrally located Westin Grand Frankfurt to the airport.
